Advanced Price Tracking Guide
Note: This guide covers detailed techniques and strategies for effective price tracking with Lio Price Browser.
Understanding Price Tracking Methods
Lio Price Browser offers multiple ways to track prices, each suited for different types of websites and products. Understanding when to use each method will improve your tracking success:
Method 1: Automatic Detection
Best for: Well-structured e-commerce sites with clear pricing elements
How it works: The app scans the page's HTML structure to identify price elements based on common patterns and attributes.
- Browse to a product page in the browser
- Tap the cart button (cart.badge.plus) in the top toolbar
- The app will scan the page for products
- Select the detected product from the list
- Confirm to add it to your tracked items
Success rate: High on major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, etc.
Method 2: Manual Selection
Best for: Complex websites or when automatic detection fails
How it works: You manually identify the price element by tapping on it, then the app monitors that specific element for changes.
- Browse to a product page
- Tap the dollar sign button to enter "Price Selection Mode"
- The page will highlight prices as you move your finger over them
- Tap on the specific price element you want to track
- Enter a name for the product (or choose from suggested names)
- Confirm to add it to your tracked items
Success rate: Very high when used properly, since you're directly selecting the exact element to track.
Method 3: Network Traffic Capture
Best for: Dynamic websites that load prices via JavaScript or AJAX
How it works: The app monitors network traffic to identify price data transmitted between the server and browser.
- First, enable Network Traffic Capture in Settings
- Browse to a product page
- Use either automatic detection or manual selection
- The app will analyze both visible elements and network data
- This provides more reliable tracking for dynamically loaded content
Success rate: High for sites that use JavaScript to display prices after the page loads.
Privacy Note: Network traffic capture only analyzes price-related data and does not monitor or store your browsing habits.
Optimizing Price Tracking Success
Choosing the Right Method for Different Sites
Based on our testing, here are recommendations for popular shopping sites:
- Amazon: Automatic detection works well for most products
- Best Buy: Automatic detection is reliable
- Etsy: Manual selection often works better due to varied store designs
- eBay: Use automatic detection for Buy It Now; manual for auctions
- Walmart: Automatic detection works well
- Specialized boutiques: Manual selection typically required
- Sites with price ranges: Use manual selection to choose the specific variant you want
Handling Difficult Websites
Some websites use techniques that make price tracking challenging:
- For dynamic content: Enable Network Traffic Capture in Settings
- For anti-scraping measures: Try manual selection instead of automatic detection
- For sites that change layout frequently: Check tracked items regularly and update if needed
- For sites that show prices only in cart: Track the "Add to Cart" page and manually monitor price changes
Viewing and Understanding Price History
Accessing Price History Charts
To view detailed price history for any tracked item:
- Go to the Tracked Items tab
- Tap on an item to open its details page
- View the price history chart at the top of the screen
- Use gesture controls to zoom in/out or view specific time periods
- Tap on data points to see exact prices and dates
Interpreting Price History Data
The price history chart provides valuable insights:
- Green points: Price decreased
- Red points: Price increased
- Gray points: No price change
- Dotted line: Original price when you started tracking
- Percentage indicators: Show percent change since tracking began
Shopping Tip: Look for cyclical patterns in price drops. Many retailers have predictable sale cycles (weekends, end of month, etc.).
Managing Tracked Items Effectively
Organization Tips
Keep your tracked items organized for better management:
- Use consistent naming: "Brand - Product Type" works well (e.g., "Sony - 55" TV")
- Create categories: Group similar items like "Electronics", "Clothing", etc.
- Use view options: Switch between All Items, By Category, By Name, or By Website as needed
- Try both views: Grid View for visual browsing, List View for detailed information
Refresh Strategies
Choose the best way to refresh prices based on your needs:
- Individual refresh: Use for urgent checks on specific items
- Pull-to-refresh: Update all visible items at once
- Group refresh: Update all items in a specific category or from a specific website
- Scheduled updates: Configure automatic updates in Settings (balance frequency vs. battery usage)
Cleanup Recommendations
Maintain a clean and efficient tracking list:
- Delete items after purchase
- Configure auto-deletion in Settings for items older than your specified period
- Periodically review items to remove those you're no longer interested in
- Consider archiving instead of deleting items you may want to reference later
Advanced Price Tracking Strategies
Cross-store Comparison
Track the same item across multiple retailers to find the best deal:
- Track the product on several different shopping sites
- Use the "By Name" view to group identical products together
- Compare current prices and historical lows
- Consider differences in shipping, tax, and return policies
Seasonal Tracking
Maximize savings by tracking items during optimal times:
- Start tracking seasonal items 1-2 months before major sales events
- Look for price adjustments on Mondays and Thursdays (common days for price changes)
- Track holiday items right after the holiday for clearance pricing
- Track technology before new model announcements (often leads to discounts on current models)
Important: If a price seems too good to be true, verify the seller's reputation and product authenticity before purchasing.
